My name is Raquel and I was in foster care for 4 years before aging out in April of 2013 and I’m a single mother of a 1 year old girl. After aging out of foster care I struggled with taking care of my daughter and even myself, and I ended up renting a 1 bedroom apartment that I couldn’t keep because I didn’t have any money and I barely had a job.
I eventually lost the apartment leaving a lot of unpaid bills, and at that point the relationship with my daughter’s father deteriorated, but even after being kicked out of my apartment I had no other choice in the matter other than to move myself and my daughter into his mother’s house. I endured an intensive, abusive relationship with my daughter’s father.
I remember thinking to myself, “I need to get out of here and never look back!” Although I was extremely afraid, I gathered to courage to finally leave.
I was referred to Hope Forward after aging out of Foster Care. I went to get assistance with housing, food, cash assistance, child care, employment and mental health services).
Hope Forward was also able to help me find my sister and now I’ve transitioned to living with her. They also assisted me with completing Social Service forms for Temporary Cash Assistance, Food Stamp Program and Childcare vouchers. They enrolled me into Family Tree for (Parenting /Bonding Classes), and I’ve been meeting with Hope Forward’s Mental Health Specialist, taking Career Development Classes and enrolled in a Nursing program. I was recently hired as a server for Banquet Serve. My daughter is enrolled in daycare fulltime now. I’m so grateful for Hope Forward and I am determined to be the best mother and provider I can be for my daughter.
